01. AI Has Helped Decode One Of DNA's Hidden “ON Switches”

Researchers analysed approximately 500,000 DNA sequences and trained machine-learning systems to recognise the DNA patterns associated with the initiator, a region involved in telling cellular machinery where gene transcription begins.

Their model suggests this initiator pattern exists in roughly 60% of human genes.

The longer-term ambition is enormous: building AI models capable of understanding more of the regulatory “code” controlling when human genes switch on and off.

In other words, we're gradually moving from simply reading DNA toward understanding its programming language.

02. A Ghostly Ribbon Of Stars Is Being Used To Map Invisible Matter

Astronomers discovered a thin stream of stars surrounding another galaxy, the first globular-cluster stellar stream identified beyond the Milky Way.

The cluster is effectively being ripped apart over billions of years, leaving behind a long trail of stars, but here's the cool part.

Because the stars' movement is dictated by gravity, researchers can use their positions to infer the distribution of something we can't see at all: dark matter. It's basically a gigantic cosmic windsock revealing an invisible gravitational landscape.

03. Scientists Found A Mysterious Human Skeleton Inside An Unexplained Stone Structure

Archaeologists excavating in Scotland discovered human remains inside a strange stone-lined structure, now the problem?

They're still not entirely sure what the structure was for.

Its carefully fitted stones and clay-like material suggest it may have been designed to retain liquid, yet someone was subsequently buried inside it. Researchers are now trying to determine both the structure's original purpose and why it became a grave.

04. NASA Is About To Launch A Space Telescope Descended From Spy-Satellite Technology

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope incorporates telescope hardware donated by the US National Reconnaissance Office after the intelligence community had surplus systems available.

The optics are comparable in aperture to Hubble, but Roman is designed to survey enormous areas of sky. Roughly 100 times Hubble's field of view for its Wide Field Instrument.

Now technology with roots in observing Earth from above is being turned outward to investigate dark energy, exoplanets and the structure of the universe.

NASA currently has Roman scheduled for launch no earlier than August 30, 2026.
